The Starsword, also known as Gwydion, is a sword carried by Ruhn Danaan and later by his sister Bryce Quinlan.

History[]

The Starsword is an ancient sword from the Fae Homeworld. It is made from a metal crafted from Iridium, which is a black ore from a fallen meteorite, and exists beyond the planet's laws.[1] It is the last of the Cauldron-made swords and was made to fight against an ancient and cruel race known as the Daglan, who are in fact the Asteri. It disappeared at the same time the Daglan vanished.

It was Queen Theia who had taken the sword with her to Midgard during the Crossing. She wielded it until her death, after which the Starsword was stolen by Prince Pelias. He used it and Luna's Horn to set himself up as prince with the help of Rigelus. He then passed the objects on to his offspring. However, Aidas mentions that the Starsword is supposed to be passed to Theia's female heirs.

Either during Pelias' reign or after his death, the Starsword was placed in the Cave of Princes, never to be touched by another female for 15,000 years. As females are not allowed in the Cave of Princes, they had no opportunity to attempt to claim it, even if they had the Starborn power in their veins. This was supposedly done on purpose, just to keep Theia's heirs from getting their hands on the sword.[2] Only the Chosen One can handle it.

The Starsword was retrieved by Ruhn during his Ordeal and he carried it until he gave it willingly to his sister Bryce. She kept on carrying it, took it with her into the Fae Homeworld and later used it together with its twin Truth-Teller to defeat the Asteri. After that, she returns both the Starsword and Truth-Teller back to the Fae Homeworld.

Powers[]

The Starsword defeats death. It is able to kill Reapers, which is supposed to be impossible. The Autumn King muses that this might be because it isn't bound to their planet's laws. When it is close to its twin, it glows with a white light in response to the dagger's dark light. The Starsword and Truth-Teller are drawn together. Bryce describes it as if the two weapons are "singing" to each other.

When together and ordered to do so, the sword and the knife can open a portal to nowhere, as the sword was Made and the knife is able Unmake things. Made and Unmade. Matter and antimatter. With the right influx of power, a command from the one destined to wield them, they can be merged. They can create a place where no life, no light exists. A place that is nothing. Nowhere.[2]

Trivia[]

  • In Midgard exists a Fae prophecy which says: "When knife and sword are reunited, so shall our people be", referring to both the Starsword and its twin Truth-Teller.[3]
  • The Autumn King avoids touching it.[4]
