Sofie Renast was a rebel who was dedicated to finding her brother after he was taken prisoner of Kavalla when their parents had been killed.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Sofie didn't care to make the Drop, but her parents had encouraged it. She'd eventually done it under the radar, in a back-alley, highly illegal Drop Center, where a leering Satyr had been her Anchor, and handing over her Firstlight had been the cost of the ritual. She spent the years following learning to wear her humanity like a cloak, inside and out.
Sofie was studying at a university - though it is unknown which - with a minor in theater. About three year prior to her first appearance, she was staying late at the library with her friends. Arriving home after midnight, she had spied the broken windows and shattered front door, the spray paint on the siding of their ordinary suburban house reading Rebel Shits and begun running. She was lucky that the dreadwolf guard posted at the front door hadn't seen her. Later, she'd managed to confirm that her parents were dead - tortured until the brutal end by either the Hind or her elite squadron of dreadwolf interrogators.
She then spent months working her way up through Ophion's hierarchy in order to attain a report that had revealed that her grandparents had been herded off upon reaching the Bracchus camp in the north, and were subsequently shot in a lineup of other elders, their bodies left to crumple into a mass grave. Still, she hadn't been able to find anything on Emile until much later. For years, she'd been working with the Ophion rebels in exchange for any snippet of information about him or her family.
Sofie also had contact with Danika Fendyr, who relayed information to her concerning the wrongdoings of the Asteri. At one point, she'd finally done enough for Ophion that they'd informed her Emile had been sent to the Kavalla camp, and had survived against all odds.
Sofie then managed a plan to get caught - she walked into Kavalla and stumbled into the path of a dreadwolf patrol, who found the fake rebel documents she'd planted in her coat. Ophion knew about the mission, but they did not know about the information Sofie had gathered from Danika; she had wanted to make sure that, before she was picked up, Pippa and Ophion knew she'd acquired that intel so that they wouldn't back out of their promises to retrieve her and Emile from the camp.
She was interrogated her for two days before the patrol had thrown her into a cattle car with others, moving her to the camp. The reek of the days crammed into the cattle car had covered the telltale Vanir scent in her blood.[1]
House of Sky and Breath[]
Sofie had spent the last two weeks in Kavalla, with the single plan to free her brother Emile. Instead, Sofie found herself not only with her thirteen-year-old brother, but with another five boys and six girls that Emile had managed to rescue from the barracks, aided by a gentle human sun-priest, who had been serving as lookout during their escape. Together, Sofie and the children escaped from camp with the help of Agent Silverbow, and were intended to be picked up by Ophion at Servast. While Sofie was able to get the children to safety, Rigelus wanted Sofie's lightning to himself, intending to use it to resurrect the dead. Due to this, he had sent The Hind and more dreadwolves to hunt Sofie down. Sofie used her powers to kill several of the dreadwolves, but was unable to reach the ship that would get her to safety. She was then shot by a sniper, which forced her to lag behind and inevitably become recaptured and interrogated. Due to her unwillingness to cooperate, she was pushed into the Haldren Sea by Mordoc, and drowned in the process.[1] Unknown to the others, the Hind was working with Ophion and threw a Comm-Crystal after Sofie, in hopes that they could hopefully rescue her, or at the very least, so that the crew of The Ocean Queen's city-ship, The Depth Charger, could pick up her body and put it into the ships morgue, preventing the Asteri from experimenting on her corpse.
Personality[]
Sofie was incredibly determined, as seen in the years she spent at Ophion, simply to gather information about her abducted - and killed - family, never giving up in finding information about them. Still, she was also easily shocked by the things she did, with all of her missions weighing heavily on her until the end of her life.
Physical Description[]
Not much is known about Sofie's appearance, but she had brown hair.
Powers & Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Slowed Aging/Immortality: Since Sofie had made the Drop, she would have aged slower.
- Thunderbird Power: According to Pippa Spetsos, Sofie had the strange gift of "not only electricity, but firstlight power, too; energy of any type was hers to command, to suck into herself."[1] She used this power to absorb electricity from the electric fence surrounding Kavalla in order to escape the death camp. She also used her power to destroy a fountain and electrocute a group of hellhounds who were pursuing her through a large puddle of water. She was even able to absorb the firstlight used to power four Omega Ships, rendering them inoperable and sinking into the ocean.
Relationships[]
Cormac Donnall[]
Cormac Donnall, whom Sofie knew primarily as Agent Silverbow (but preferred to call Silver), was her superior officer but later became her lover.
