Hypaxia Enador, a former Medwitch and Queen of the Valbaran Witches, is the current Head of House of Flame and Shadow.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Not much is known about Hypaxia's early life. Upon the wishes of her mother, Queen Hecuba Enador, Hypaxia grew up in near solitude in mother's mountain fortress. She was so sheltered that no photos of her even exist. Hypaxia's necromancer abilities made her mother think it was best she learn in seclusion. She was educated by three very ancient ghosts. Queen Hecuba thought they would be the best teachers of not only necromancy, but everything a queen needs to know.
Hypaxia's undead tutors predate the Asteri's arrival and were long dead before the Northern Rift opened. They remember the time when Parthos still stood. One of her tutors, Palania, was born in the city surrounding it and tells Hypaxia about the peaceful realm where the dead went before the arrival of the Asteri and the creation of places like the Bone Quarter. Hypaxia found a way to stop her mother's soul from going to an eternal resting place like the Bone Quarter knowing she would be harvested as secondlight if she did.
House of Earth and Blood[]
Queen Hecuba has died a month ago. Hypaxia has been crowned the new witch-queen of Valbara. Her reign will officially be recognized by the Asteri at the Summit next month. The Autumn King plans to betroth his son Ruhn Danaan to Hypaxia soon after.
She is helping Ruhn while he is investigating Synth and the drug's origins. She is working as a medwitch in Lunathion to get a taste of normal life before being formally crowned as the Witch Queen, after having spent most of her early life in seclusion. She provides Ruhn with research information about Synth and tells him to let her know if he can get his hands on some venom from a kristallos demon so she can continue her research on trying to create an antidote for a Synth overdose.
Ruhn mentions to Bryce and Hunt that his medwitch contact needs more kristallos venom if they happen to get some, which leads Bryce to turn to Hypaxia for help when Hunt encourages her to have the scar on her leg checked out due to it constantly hurting her. They go to see Hypaxia, who successfully extracts and stabilizes the kristallos venom. She later sends a sample of the resulting Synth antidote to Bryce as a thank you, inadvertently saving Bryce from overdosing on the drug during her fight with Micah Domitus.
Hypaxia's identity is revealed during the Summit when she is officially recognized as the new Witch Queen by the Asteri.
House of Sky and Breath[]
A few months later, Hypaxia has formerly accepted the Autumn King's proposal to marry her to his son and has also began to form friendships with other inhabitants of Lunathion, including Tharion Ketos.
Hypaxia asks Ruhn to officially accompany her to Celestina and Ephraim's mating celebration, expressing that she doesn't trust the Coven of Witches meant to be her subordinates and advisors due to the fact they were chosen by her mother and not her. Having been raised away from the rest of the witch court, Hypaxia is estranged from the rest of the coven and they're uncomfortable around her due to her necromantic abilities. She is concerned the coven might think to replace her with her sister, the Hind. She has no witch gifts, making her nothing but a figurehead and allowing her mother’s general, Morganthia to rule. The coven wants a closer bond to the Asteri, at the cost of their relative autonomy, where Hypaxia dreams of restoring the witches to their former glory.
As her official fiancé, Ruhn hires Ithan Holstrom as her bodyguard in exchange for Hypaxia using her necromancy to help Ithan contact his dead brother. Hypaxia agrees, but tells Ithan it can only happen on the night of the Autumnal Equinox, the same night as the mating celebration. Ruhn also uses the excuse of commandeering Ariadne for use as a bodyguard as a cover for Ithan's foolish actions when he stole Ariadne and three fire sprites from the Astronomer, who was enslaving Ariadne and the sprites.
She and Bryce begin to form a friendship after Bryce asks her out for pizza and "girl talk" when Bryce needs someone to confide in about the Auntumn King's plot to wed her off to Cormac Donnall. Bryce also tries to talk up her brother to the Witch Queen, hoping that the two of them will come to form an attraction to one another and have a happy marriage. Hypaxia confides to Bryce that she had a lover prior to her engagement to Ruhn, which is the source of why she is distant and hesitant of actually forming a relationship with him, because she's already in love.
When leaving the restaurant, they're attacked by a couple of Deathstalker demons and Ithan's throat is ripped out, rendering him unable to protect Hypaxia and Bryce. Ariadne is nowhere to be found, having abandoned her assignment and running off. Hypaxia and Bryce team up to defeat the demons, with Hypaxia using her magic to supercharge Bryce's special powers so she is able to teleport to Ithan's dying body and get his gun. Bryce is able to then shoot and kill one of the demons while Hypaxia takes out the other with a knife to the skull by jumping from her broom. Hypaxia then uses her healing abilities to save Ithan, as he wasn't healing fast enough. She takes him back to the Consulate where she is staying in order to keep an eye on his healing for the night. Ithan tells Hypaxia he heard what she told Bryce about how she did something to save her mother's soul from going to the sleeping realms to be harvested for secondlight and asks her to do the same to Connor. He also tells Hypaxia about the wolf mystic being held by the Astronomer, and asks if there is anything she can do. She tells him there probably isn't anything more she could do that his other friends couldn't.
Hypaxia and Ruhn attend Celestina and Ephriam's mating celebration together, but Hypaxia is distracted and looking around for her sister. She tells Ruhn that she has never met Lidia and is nervous about it now. Ruhn offers to go with her. They approach the Hind and the Hammer and Hypaxia dismisses Pollux so she can talk to her sister. Ruhn also uses this opportunity to excuse himself to go meet up with Agent Daybright, whose identity he hasn't discovered yet. At some point, Hypaxia excuses herself from the party, claiming stomach cramping. Bryce and Hunt sneak off to find a place to have sex and accidentally walk in on Hypaxia and Celestina in the middle of a tryst. Celestina is ready to go on the offensive to keep their relationship a secret, but Bryce and Hypaxia are able to diffuse the situation and calm both Celestia and Hunt, keeping the angels from fighting one another in defense of their respective lovers. Bryce and Hunt promise to keep their secret.
Hypaxia returns to the party to find that Ruhn has left without telling anyone, so she leaves to meet Ithan for the summoning ritual. During the summoning, Hypaxia remarks how strong Connor's spirit seems to be and Ithan feels pride for this until the spirit finally manifests and is revealed to actually be The Under-King. The Under-King tells them Connor is well cared for, but whether he remains that way is up to Ithan. The Under-King doesn't tell him what that means, only says he wants to play a game with them. He is curious about Hypaxia's abilities. He disappears, but they suddenly can hear the hunting hounds of the House of Flame and Shadow.
Ithan and Hypaxia eventually meet up with the others at the training center and explain how the Under-King toyed with them, trapping them in the orchard with his dogs. It took Hypaxia a while to find a way out of the wards that wouldn't kill them. They inform Hunt that the Under-King wants to see Bryce at Urd's Temple and if she doesn't go, then he will send Connor and the rest of the Pack of Devils through the Gate and make them into secondlight.
